Clinical Psychology Ph.D.

The UCF Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program was first accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2003. We then received a five-year full reaccreditation by the APA in 2008. In the UCF Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program, training is accomplished through an integrated set of classroom, laboratory, and community-based experiences consistent with a research-practitioner model of training and to support the critical professional dimensions for future psychologists. There are 111 semester hours of courses, seminars, practica, and research. These experiences evolve from the development of basic skills in the first year to the supervision of other students in year four. Students are expected to complete their dissertations in the fourth year and to complete an off-campus internship in year five. The degree will be awarded upon completion of the internship (and all University requirements), typically at the end of the fifth year.

The Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Central Florida educates and trains its students “to generate and integrate scientific and professional knowledge, attitudes and skills so as to further psychological science, the professional practice of psychology, and human welfare. The graduate of this training model is capable of functioning as an investigator and as a practitioner, and may function as either or both, consistent with the highest standards in psychology” (National Conference on the Education and Training of Scientist-Practitioners for the Professional Practice of Psychology, 1990, pp. 7-8). Graduates of this program also receive specific training in university level classroom instruction/instructional technology, clinical supervision, mental health administration, and program evaluation/consultation consistent with the changing role of clinical psychologists in the 21st century.

Our departmental mission statement directs us to provide high quality education to include “the dissemination of state-of-the-field theoretical and empirical information, training in the methodological, statistical, and technical skills necessary to conduct psychological research, and practice in the application of psychological knowledge to real-life problems.” Our doctoral program aspires to achieve excellence in clinical and research training and to contribute to and perpetuate psychological science and practice through faculty and graduate student involvement in scholarly and professional activities. Our faculty and graduate students advocate for initiatives that affect the profession of psychology and the welfare of individuals, families, and groups, and are active members of professional organizations and contributors to psychological science.

Degree Requirements
The Clinical Ph.D. track is designed to be completed in five years of full-time study, regardless of whether the student enters with a bachelor's or master's degree. The program includes a one-year predoctoral internship to be completed off-campus at an APA accredited internship site. It is designed to be a full-time program, with some summer enrollment expected. There are a total of 111 semester hours of courses, practica, and research requirements in the track as detailed below. Courses are presented in sequential fashion and students entering with a baccalaureate degree will earn the M.S. degree in route to the Ph.D.(Note: courses listed under the Ph.D. program that are required for the M.S. degree are listed separately after the Ph.D. courses). A master’s thesis and a dissertation, which represents a significant contribution to the discipline, are both required. Successful completion of the Qualifying and Comprehensive Examination is required prior to initiation of dissertation research.
