National Ergonomics Month (NEM)
What is it?
National ergonomics month is a period of time to promote awareness of the field of human factors and ergonomics. As designated by our national organization, HFES NEM, we focus our efforts on creating educational events during the month of October each year. Some of the main goals of the national organization include:
- Introduce 10 million adults to human factors and ergonomics by 2010
- Educate students about careers in human factors and ergonomics
- Increase understanding of human factors in the professional community
- Promote professional development of students in human factors
Current plans for October 2006
In order to accomplish our goals we have set aside a number of products and activities to focus on this October. In order to reach out to students on campus, we have decided to create a display of video games with the intent of describing physical ergonomics, psychological immersion through graphic/haptics interfaces, and the usage of simulation as a platform for training/experimentation. As a matter of general education, we also plan on creating a smaller display illustrating the timeline and progression of Human Factors and Ergonomics as a field. In addition to performing outreach on campus, we intend to set up a display at the Orlando Science Center later in the month.
